Ways to Overcome Human Trafficking In Asian.

KUALA LUMPUR: Two men were separately charged in the Sessions Court here Friday with human trafficking and reaping profit from the activity. Mohd Nazeri Mat Hussein, 50, of Rantau Panjang, Kelantan, is alleged to have trafficked a Myanmar, Mohd Ikbal Mohd Ali, 29, behind the wholesale market complex at KM12, Jalan Ipoh, Sentul, at 11:30am on April 22 (Bernama News, 2009).

There are many source and causes of human trafficking in Asian such as China, Vietnam, Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia, Cambodia, and Malaysia. We need to find out why this problem exists, what can be done to overcome it and what are the protection and prevention.

There are many source and causes of why human trafficking happened in Asian. One of the source human trafficking is recruited by false promises. Many people are recruited by false promise of employment and are later coerced into prostitution or forced labor. Many women are girls are trafficked by international criminal syndicates. Children are sometimes recruited by traffickers who promise their parents that their children can send remittances back home. Besides that, women and men are trafficked for labor as factories and construction or domestic servants. Sometimes, they are recruited through fraudulent marriage, licensed and unlicensed migrant labor recruiting agencies (Joyce, 2009).

For example, a small number of Malaysian women and children, primarily of Chinese ethnicity, are trafficked for sexual exploitation in Singapore, Macau, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Japan. The Ministry of Foreign Affair and NGOs estimate that fewer than 100 Malaysian women were trafficked abroad during 2006 and that the number had declined in recent years.

One of the causes of human trafficking in Asia is little education. Furthermore, they are lack of awareness of trafficking. For example, there are many causes of human trafficking in China. The Chinese NGO, All-China Women’s Federation, reports rapid economic development along China’s east coast and 150 surplus laborers in rural areas have resulted in massive internal migration (Joyce, 2009).

For the causes of human trafficking in Vietnam are different. UNICEF argues that the causes are poverty, little education, lack awareness of trafficking, family conflict, shared and difficult-to-police border between the two countries.

There are many actions to overcome and reduce this problem. One of the action to overcome this problem is the government has taken the action to protect the trafficking victims. The government supports shelters where victims receive psychological counseling, food, board, and medical care. The government also collaborates with the International Organization for Migration to set up transit facilities and shelters. For example, the Chinese Government provides short-term shelters and medical care to trafficking victims along the southern border provinces and in Guangzi(Mangy, 2007).

While, to reduce the human trafficking cases, the government also has taken the prevention. The Vietnamese Government continues to support an array of projects to prevent human trafficking. The goverment has developed a number of awareness raising projects, and vocational training for teenage girls in high-risk areas. The goverment has also created a llegal handbook for judges and prosecutors and collaborated with NGOs to train law enforcement.

The statistic for human trafficking in Asia is very higher. Estimates as high as 80% of trafficking victims are women and over-50% in slavery was children. The Philippines is a source, transit, and destination country for human trafficking. The number of Philippine and foreign child victims in the Philippines range from 20,000 to 100,000. Foreign tourists, particularly other Asians, sexually exploit women and children in the Philippines (Dough, 2008).

There are at least 30 million victims of moden day slavery in the world today. UNICEF estimates that human trafficking generates approximately $9.5 billion each year. It is second only to drug trafficking in international crime. There are some 2.5 million people are being trafficking.

Thus, it is evident that lack of awareness of trafficking and little education are the main causes for human trafficking happened. To overcome this problem, the U.S Department of State recommends that all country should take significant measures to improve in these areas revise its anti-trafficking provisions to align with its international obligations, including prohibiting the commercial sexual exploitation of children under age 18 and all forms of forced labor and proceed with its plans to finalize and adopt the National Action Plan.
